What is my vintage Elgin watch worth?

Most vintage Elgins are worth a few hundred dollars: the median on sale today is listed at $336. A solid gold one is worth about twice that, and the case back usually tells you which you have.

Chances are your Elgin came down the family. Elgin was America’s great watch factory, founded in Illinois in 1864, and for the best part of a century it turned out pocket watches for railwaymen and wristwatches for graduations and long service. There are an awful lot of them about, which is great for the story and keeps prices modest.

We looked at 493 vintage Elgin listings, 161 on sale now and 332 that have come off the market, to see what they actually go for. Mostly it comes down to two things: whether the case is solid gold, and whether it’s really a vintage Elgin at all.

What each kind of Elgin is worth

Start with the dial and the shape. Most Elgins just say Elgin, but a few names turn up again and again, and it’s worth knowing which you’re holding.

Four Elgins to know, all for sale in October 2026: a Lord Elgin “Black Knight” in its original box at $475; a B.W. Raymond wristwatch at $635; a pocket watch with every minute numbered round the dial at $475; and a Shockmaster with a golf ball dial at $495. Each one links to its listing.

Listing prices in US dollars, October 2026. Kinds are counted by what the listing says, so a solid gold Lord Elgin sits in two rows. “Came off the market” is the last price the listing showed, not the sale price.

For our money, the case metal matters more than anything written on the dial. A gold-filled Lord Elgin sits right in the middle of the pack, while solid gold Elgins have last listed at about twice as much. And at the bottom of the table is the one to rule out first: a modern quartz watch with Elgin on the dial.

So what is a vintage Elgin worth?

Put simply, a few hundred dollars. Half the Elgins on sale today are listed below $336, and the ones that have come off the market last listed at a median of $340. We can’t see what buyers finally paid, so treat both as the going rate rather than a cheque.

Age makes less difference than you’d think. Elgins from the 1920s that came off the market last listed at a median of $420, the 1950s at $400 and the 1960s at $359.

How old is my Elgin?

Elgin made this easy, as long as you can get the back off. Inside is the movement, the mechanism that runs the watch, and stamped on it is a serial number. Elgin numbered its movements in order as they were made, so that number gives you the year. Type it into an Elgin serial number lookup, such as the one at Pocket Watch Database, and you’ll have your answer in seconds.

Mind you, the number on the case is the case maker’s, not Elgin’s, because Elgin often sold movements to be cased by other firms. And the back usually unscrews or prises off, but if it’s stiff, let a jeweller do it. A slipped knife does more damage than the watch is worth.

Which Elgin do I have?

Lord Elgin
Elgin’s best wristwatches, usually with 21 or 23 jewels and a gold-filled or solid gold case. They’re the ones that came in presentation boxes, like the Black Knight above.

B.W. Raymond
Elgin’s railroad-grade name, made to the accuracy railways demanded. You’ll mostly find it on big pocket watches, sometimes on wristwatches. The six that came off the market last listed at a median of $505, the best of any Elgin name we track, though six is too few to lean on.

Shockmaster
A later, more everyday line of wristwatches. Often fun dials, like the golf ball one above, and priced around the Elgin average. If you want a vintage Elgin to actually wear every day, this is the one we’d pick.

Pocket watches
Elgin made millions of them, which is exactly why most are worth less than people hope. Fancy dials, solid gold hunter cases and railroad grades do better. A plain one in a base metal case is a treasured heirloom and a modest sale.

A modern gold-tone Elgin quartz watch with a fluted bezel and date window
Not a vintage Elgin: a later gold-tone quartz watch with Elgin on the dial, listed at $165 in October 2026. The eight quartz Elgins that came off the market in our archive last listed at a median of $49. View the listing.

Which brings us to the one to rule out. Elgin stopped making watches in America in the 1960s, and the name was later put on imported quartz watches sold in department stores. If yours says quartz on the dial, or the second hand jumps once a second, it’s one of those. Nothing wrong with it, but it’s a modern watch worth tens of dollars, not a vintage Elgin.

Is my gold Elgin worth more?

Only if it’s solid, and most aren’t. Elgin cased a great many watches in gold-filled cases: a thick layer of gold bonded over base metal, built to last decades. It looks every bit the part, and it’s worth about the same as any other Elgin.

Case, as the listing describes itOn sale nowCame off the market, median

Gold-filled (GF, RGP, rolled gold)18$370 (31 watches)

The case back tells you which. “14K” or “10K” on its own means solid gold. “Gold filled”, “GF”, “1/20 12K” or “RGP” means a gold layer, whatever the karat says. Our guide to telling real gold from plate goes through every stamp.

A Lord Elgin in a solid 14k gold case on a brown leather strap
A Lord Elgin listed as solid 14k gold at $1,350 in October 2026, one of two solid gold Elgins on sale in our archive. If you’re selling one, a clear photo of the stamp inside the back is the first thing a buyer will want. View the listing.

The same goes for a ladies’ Elgin: what matters is the stamp, not the size. The solid gold Elgins that came off the market ran from about $340 to $1,300. With a solid gold case the gold also sets a floor, so if a buyer offers you very little, get a jeweller to weigh it first.

Is my Elgin worth more than $1,000?

Probably not, and it’s kinder to hear that now. Only about 1 in 10 Elgins that came off the market last listed above $748. A solid gold case gives yours the best chance of being up there.

That said, Elgins are some of the easiest vintage watches to live with. They were built to be serviced, parts are still about, and a gold-filled Lord Elgin on a new leather strap looks smarter than most watches at twice the price. If it’s not about the money, we’d get it running and wear it.

Thinking of selling it?

Keep in mind that our figures are listing prices. A dealer buying from you will offer well below them, because they need room to service it and make a margin. That’s normal, not a rip-off. Selling it yourself gets closer to the listing price, with more effort.

Don’t get it serviced first. It can cost a big slice of what an everyday Elgin is worth, and buyers expect to sort that themselves. Just say honestly whether it runs. And if there’s an engraving on the back, a name or a date, leave it. It matters more to your family than to a buyer, and polishing it off won’t add a penny.

Common questions

What is a vintage Elgin watch worth?
Usually a few hundred dollars. In October 2026 the median vintage Elgin on sale in our archive was listed at $336, and the 332 that came off the market last listed at a median of $340. Those are listing prices, not sale prices.

How do I tell how old my Elgin is?
Open the case back and find the serial number stamped on the movement, the mechanism inside. Elgin numbered its movements in order, so the serial gives you the year it was made, using any Elgin serial number lookup. The number on the case is the case maker's, not Elgin's.

Is a Lord Elgin worth more?
Not on its own. Lord Elgin was Elgin's best line of wristwatches, but the 70 that came off the market in our archive last listed at a median of $325, just under Elgin as a whole at $340. A solid gold case is what lifts the price.

What is a vintage Elgin pocket watch worth?
Less than most people expect. The 28 Elgin pocket watches on sale in our archive are listed at a median of $240. Railroad-grade B.W. Raymonds have done better: the six that came off the market last listed at a median of $505.

Is a gold Elgin worth more?
Solid gold, yes. The 12 solid gold Elgins that came off the market last listed at a median of $700, against $370 for gold-filled. Most gold-coloured Elgins are gold-filled: look for 'gold filled', 'GF' or 'RGP' on the case back.
