How much is a vintage Seiko worth?
A vintage Seiko is about as safe a first vintage watch as there is: well made, easy to wear, and usually cheaper than a new fashion watch. We looked at 1,343 vintage Seiko listings (444 on sale, 899 that came off the market), leaving out Seiko’s modern lines so they don’t pull the numbers up.

For our money, the sweet spot is $300 to $500: a good Seiko 5 or a Grand Quartz you can wear every day.
Grand Quartz vs Grand Seiko
This is the mix-up that catches buyers out. Grand Quartz was a well-made 1970s quartz line, worth about $400. Grand Seiko is Seiko’s top range, worth about $1,200. The names and dials look alike, and listings sometimes blur the two. Look for the GS logo on the dial: a Grand Quartz has “Grand Quartz” written in full instead.

Best vintage Seiko to buy
| Budget | Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Under $300 | Seiko 5 | The everyday automatic: winds itself, shows the day and date. The cheapest way to find out if vintage is for you. |
| About $400 | Grand Quartz or Lord Matic | Our pick: a smart, accurate Grand Quartz with no winding and the best dials at the price. The Lord Matic is the dressier automatic. |
| About $800 | Chronograph or diver | Collected, so they cost more. Check the stopwatch works or the bezel turns. |
| $1,000 and up | Grand Seiko | The vintage Seiko to save for. Look for GS on the dial. |
Vintage Seiko ladies watches
Some of the best value in vintage watches: the 50 ladies’ pieces that came off the market last listed at a median of $339, many of them slim 1970s and 1980s quartz watches. Check the case width in millimetres against a watch you already own first, because they’re often smaller than the photos suggest.

How to buy a vintage Seiko: what to check
| Check | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Original dial | Cheap Seikos are often repainted to look fresh, which knocks the value down. Ask if the dial is original. |
| Running | A video of an automatic running. For quartz, a new battery and good timekeeping: a dead quartz movement can cost more than the watch. |
| Age | The case back serial: first digit is the year, second the month (O, N, D for October to December). |
| Returns | Buy from a seller who takes returns, and pay in a way that protects you. |
| Japanese day wheel | Days in Japanese characters are normal on Seikos sold in Japan. Nothing to worry about. |
Our guide to redials shows what a repainted dial looks like, and the guide to buying a vintage watch covers where to buy safely.
Vintage Seiko FAQs
How much is a vintage Seiko worth?
Usually a few hundred dollars. The 899 vintage Seikos that came off the market in our archive last listed at a median of $388, and live ones are listed at a median of $411. A vintage Grand Seiko is the exception, at a median of $1,202. Those are listing prices, not sale prices.
Is Seiko Grand Quartz the same as Grand Seiko?
No. Grand Quartz was Seiko's well-made 1970s quartz line, and it lists at a median of about $410. Grand Seiko is Seiko's top range, marked with a GS logo, and lists at about $1,200. Check the dial: “Grand Quartz” written out is not a Grand Seiko.
What is the best vintage Seiko to buy?
For most people, a Seiko 5 automatic at around $300 or a Grand Quartz at around $400. If you want something special and can spend more, a 1960s or 1970s Grand Seiko is the one to save for.
How do I tell how old a vintage Seiko is?
Look at the serial number on the case back. The first digit is usually the last digit of the year and the second is the month (October to December show as O, N and D), so a serial starting 82 is most likely February 1978 or 1988. The case style and movement number narrow down which decade.
Are vintage Seiko ladies watches worth buying?
Yes, and they're cheap. The 50 ladies' vintage Seikos that came off the market in our archive last listed at a median of $339. Check the size before you buy: many are much smaller than they look in photos.
